Pagan God Class for GLOG (and the Ω template)

Pagan God

by Divedog

(suggested music track)

Before those creatures of fire bled iron from the hills, before they fashioned clay to carry water, your kind was there, watching their first steps on the jungle floor. You belong to a primordial kin whose reign over the earth has long since faded to creation-myth and fable. Many humans still worship your kind as gods, but many and more temples lie in ivy and grass as those creatures of fire learn to harness Earth and bridle her mysteries. Loneliness and zealots hunt you, as they have run down your elden relatives.

True Form: Your true form is a cottage-sized animal capable of mental speech in addition to everything a normally-sized version is capable of. Your also wear Earth's funeral gift: a human form bearing only minute details of your true form (ears, a tail, eyes, etc). It takes simple measures to hide these from humans, but other pagan gods can never be deceived. To shift to or from this true form, you must only ingest a bit of someone else's blood or an earnest offering. You can only shift if unfettered, and doing so tears through any clothes you are wearing.

New Age: Mark each entry when it occurs. Once three have been marked, gain the Ω template Slipped from your Hands.
▢ Call a city or town your home.
▢ Destroy another pagan god's legacy or life.
▢ Reject an earnest offering.
▢ Go a year or more without shifting from your human form.
▢ Wed a non-god.
▢ Devote yourself to a craft of technology or novelty.
▢ Eat the flesh of the animal your true form resembles (as a meal).

Starting Equipment: An offering given to you (votive, food & drink, etc) and a disguising garb.

Starting Skill: Green Mysteries, prehistory lore, or ancient lore.

A: Senses, Instinct
    B: Miracle
    C: Epithet
    D: Domain
    Ω: Slipped from your Hands

[A] Senses: You have the full senses of your true form even when humanoid.

[A] Instinct: You have bestial reaction times and can move your human form like it's a human-sized version of your true form (bound like a hare, climb like a gecko, bite like a bear, etc.)

[B] Miracle: Gain a d6 Miracle Die. Roll it to perform a minor miracle of nature related to what you were worshiped for. On a 1 or 2, you cannot perform miracles again until you receive an earnest offering from a stranger.

[C] Epithet: Gain the supernatural powers your origin-land's folktales attribute to the animals your true form resembles (tanuki's shapeshifting, wolf's true-sight, salamander's flames, heron's fortune, etc.)

[D] Domain: The place you make your home becomes your domain, and you gain power over the nature within. Your deific status attracts [your level] servants (humanoid and animal) who assist you in mundane matters. If you took Miracle, your Miracle Die becomes a d12. Should you exercise your role as a god (openly or secretly), your local community will shield you from faithlessness and destruction.

[Ω] Slipped from your Hands: You have become one with the creatures of fire and joined your heartbeat to their rhythms. You may no longer take any more templates in this class. Your default from is humanoid, and being in your true form for longer than [your level] hours a day completely exhausts you. If you took Miracle, your Miracle Die becomes a d4; if you took Miracle and Domain, it instead becomes a d8.

This is my osr take on the gods/spirits in Spice & Wolf, with some emphasis placed on the angst and struggles between the turning of the ages and each god's attempts to cling to the past. The "Ω/omega template" idea was partly inspired by Sam Sorensen's Δ Templates. Where Δ templates are gained by fulfilling specific requirements, the Ω template is for something that ends the class' advancement.
